INTERVIEW: THE BIG MOON

RESOUND catches up with The Big Moon’s guitarist Soph Nathan as the band prepares for their UK tour and the launch of their third album ‘Here Is Everything’.

Four-piece indie rockers The Big Moon, have a busy September with the launch of their new album and headlining an eight city tour of the UK

The Band’s guitarist Soph told us ‘We are in the middle of rehearsing for the tour and we’re pleased how things are coming together. We’re really looking forward to sharing the new songs with our audiences from Here is Everything but also sharing some of our favourites from Walking Like We Do which we released in 2000 just before Covid. This will be our first chance to play some of these live.

Rehearsals are going well, we are working on a heavier sound for the live shows. It’s funny how (during Covid) you get used to not doing what you love. But we played a few festivals in the summer and now we’re really ready for it.’

Here is Everything has a unique and personal vibe with Fern Ford working on the audio files in her home studio. ‘We really know this album in a different way – inside out, because we focused on so many little details of how we wanted it to be. We had the music at our fingertips in a way that we hadn’t had before. We’ve never had that time before. It felt right to sit in a room together and work on it.

We’ve really enjoyed making videos for the album. In particular the video for Wide Eyes which was directed by Louis Bhose. It was the sixth video he directed for the band, he came up with the idea. It was nice working with him. We had real fun making it. We did so much rehearsal. Louis wanted us to have the choreography in our bones so by the time we came to film we could just have fun.’

The band has been together for eight years, releasing their first album in 2015. Singer and songwriter Jules and drummer Fern were the band’s first members. Soph told us ‘I met up with Jules at a pub and was nervous that we wouldn’t get on, but we clicked straight away’ Celia joined a couple of weeks later. So we didn’t know each other when we met but eight years later we’re such good friends. It’s almost like we are a we’re in a relationship! We’re such a unit.’

Soph is particularly looking forward to the last gig of the tour at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town. ‘This is like a home gig for me as I’m from around there. We’re looking forward to playing at Oran Mor in Glasgow too. We’ve always enjoyed playing Glasgow have played Nice and Sleazy and The Garage in the past. The crowds were great.’

The Big Moon release ‘Here Is Everything’ on October 14 on Fiction Records.
