{"id":2582,"date":"2022-07-24T16:29:35","date_gmt":"2022-07-24T15:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/re-sound.co.uk\/?p=2582"},"modified":"2023-01-28T19:56:23","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T19:56:23","slug":"ten-minutestrnsmt-with-the-snuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/re-sound.co.uk\/ten-minutestrnsmt-with-the-snuts\/","title":{"rendered":"TEN MINUTES@TRNSMT with THE SNUTS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>I would say the cream chinos that I\u2019ve got on are a sign of how far we\u2019ve come.<\/p><cite>Joe McGillveray, The Snuts.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Snuts <\/strong>are one of Scotland\u2019s hottest bands at the moment and were a great hit with the crowd at this year\u2019s TRNSMT. reSound had a quick catch up with drummer Jordan \u2018Joko\u2019 Mackay and guitarist Joe McGillveray before they took to the Main Stage to see how they were feeling about this landmark gig, happening one year later than planned due to their last minute cancellation last year due to Covid, as well as chatting about their new single, album and tour<em>, <\/em>the close-knit unit <strong>The Snuts<\/strong> really are and how Joe\u2019s trousers show just how far they\u2019ve come over the last few of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your new single <em>The Rodeo<\/em> was <em>Radio X<\/em>\u2019s <em>Record of the Week<\/em> and was premiered on <em>Radio 1<\/em> as the <em>\u2018Hottest Record In The World<\/em>\u2019. What impact is it having on you guys? Is it a big deal?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> Definitely. Things like that are massive milestones. It gives a sense of validation to the work that we\u2019re doing so it\u2019s always great hearing things like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Snuts - The Rodeo (Official Lyric Video)\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v6tjm9OAK6Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So what can we expect from The Snuts\u2019 new album <em>Burn The Empire<\/em>? Any surprises?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> We\u2019ve collaborated with an amazing artist called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelchinouriri.com\/\"><strong>Rachel Chinouriri<\/strong><\/a> on a track called <em>End Of The Road, <\/em>and the songs that are left are definitely <strong>Snuts<\/strong> but I suppose they\u2019re <em>new <\/em><strong>Snuts<\/strong>. We were in a studio the middle of nowhere when we recorded the album so there was just this pure sense of freedom when writing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And is there a tour planned following the release of the album?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe: <\/strong>Yes there\u2019s definitely a tour in the works. The Scottish dates have just been announced for <em>The Usher Hall <\/em>in Edinburgh, <em>O2 Academy<\/em> in Glasgow and <em>Ironworks <\/em>in Inverness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s great when bands take their tour beyond the central belt and visits cities like Inverness. All the hits?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> Yeah, all the tunes, a couple of surprises, all the cool stuff. It\u2019s definitely going to be our biggest production for sure, we\u2019ll do the new single, things like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it certainly was their biggest production yet. From the anthemic cries of <em>The Rodeo<\/em>, and guest appearances from <strong>Bemz<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelchinouriri.com\/\"><strong>Rachel Chinouriri<\/strong><\/a> to the unabashed swagger of <em>All Your Friends <\/em>and pulsing groove of <em>Fatboy Slim, <\/em>they had the boisterous audience in the palms of their hands. There was also no ignoring that popular chant \u201cF*** the Tories\u201d with lead singer Jack Cochrane pointing out \u201cyou\u2019re on the BBC and I\u2019m not going to stop you\u201d. Then again, that\u2019s no surprise really with their new album\u2019s title track <em>Burn The Empire <\/em>referring to the injustice young people are up against from corporations and politicians and the need to obliterate this for a more equal society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jack&#8217;s a great frontman but if he decided to quit, would any of you be up for that role?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> Na, there\u2019s no one to take his place. Jack\u2019s a natural frontman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> I think 29 (Callum &#8217;29&#8217; Wilson, bassist) enjoys standing on the old monitor desk every now and then but I think we\u2019re quite a solid unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> There\u2019s naebody as good as him (looking at Joe).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> Yeah, and I\u2019ve never played with another drummer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aw I\u2019m welling up over here\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> If one of us left it would all just kind of fold and all that, I imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well it sounds like they\u2019re a solid bunch, glad to hear it! &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Snuts are highly regarded by Louis Tomlinson and you&#8217;re supporting him on his world tour. Did you guys ever consider going down the X-Factor route?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> No, not at all, it was never a path to success that we really looked at. When we first started out we were more interested in the actual standing in pubs, like in our home town, and playing shows than the fame thing. Where does your allegiance lie?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> Eh, I didn\u2019t like the face that you pulled when you said Whitburn.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oops I didn\u2019t ever realise I was doing it\u2026 but in my defence point out that I live in a Fife town renowned for the scent of lino\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordon: <\/strong>Ok, fair do\u2019s then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe: <\/strong>So how can your turn up your nose at Whitburn then?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hmmm I\u2019m out numbered here\u2026where are those <strong>Shambolics<\/strong> lads when I need them? So Glasgow or Edinburgh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> I like the west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> Yes, we\u2019ve always kind of aligned with Glasgow. Whitburn had lot of overspill from the Gorbals and tenements so we\u2019ve got lots of people in Whitburn with super strong Glasgow accents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan: <\/strong>In Whitburn if you go even a mile to the east you get more of the Edinburgh \u2018eh\u2019 twang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve read that you\u2019ve been inspired by Scottish ned culture. Is that related to where you\u2019re from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> Yeah, well me definitely. I mean where we\u2019re from it was just the culture that we had, you know we all wore our hats pointing to the sky!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yep I know your type, sonny Jim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> I would say the cream chinos that I\u2019ve got on are a sign of how far we\u2019ve come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> I\u2019m still wearing trackies\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I fear for those cream chinos, of all the colours too\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> Aye, they\u2019re going to be mockit (aka filthy) later on, they\u2019re single use chinos, don\u2019t tell the vegans! *<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, back to live music, what\u2019s your preference &#8211; gigs in traditional venues like the <em>Barrowlands<\/em>, stadium gigs or festivals?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan: <\/strong>The <em>Barrowlands<\/em> gigs we did are still my favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> I think they\u2019re different animals and both have their pros and cons. At Glasto a couple of weeks ago we weren\u2019t in the biggest of tents or stages and it was a little bit rough and ready, you\u2019re put on the stage, you\u2019ve got 20 minutes to get your stuff on stage then you plug in, off you go then straight back off again. But then sometimes I think when it\u2019s a headline show I\u2019ve got too long to get inside my head and start stressing out about stuff. Sometimes we get a 45 minute soundcheck and it can be great at the start but then near the end something will go wrong, sometimes less prep is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So,<\/strong> <strong>Glastonbury or TRNSMT?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joe:<\/strong> I\u2019d say TRNSMT<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jordan:<\/strong> TRNSMT so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I think after the reaction to the incredible show they put on afterwards, that answer will remain a reSounding TRNSMT for a while yet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>* <em>NO chinos<\/em> were hurt in the making of this interview.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Snuts\u2019<\/strong> new album <strong>All Your Friends <\/strong>is out on October 7 and the tour starts on 2 October in Bristol.
